Year End Review for Work: Motivation for Future

Well there was some good and some bad when I had my Year End Review two days ago. The result of it sent me into a little self analysis mode to evaluate where I am and where I am going. Onto the details.

I work at a large financial services company that deals heavily in mutual funds and retirement engines. We have more than 12,000 people and have not laid of a single crew member in our history. The rumor round the office was that merit increases and bonuses were going to be slim to none this year, and boy were they right.

I receive a generous 0.9% raise and a nice fat $1,000 year end bonus. Do not mistake my numerical descriptions for sarcasm as I am truly grateful for receiving any number greater than zero. Speaking with fellow employees, the majority of the people got 0% and $0.00. So that was a positive part but there were some drawbacks.

I have in my position for six months and this group has an extremely steep learning curve. My boss told me that I have done a “good” job in my short time, but he needs to see more out of me. Basically, in my short time, I did not meet my expectations of shocking their socks off with my performance. This disappoints me, but I have no one to blame but myself.

My group is getting restructured as well, two senior members are moving laterally to assist on a new project, one senior member is going to move to another existing project, and one contractor is getting let go (This is how they advertise not laying off any employees, cut the contractors). This means that the current team will be responsible for the same work and stretched to its limits.

It is my time to shine. Starting the next day after my review, which was yesterday. This is the reason the blog was dormant for 24 or so hours. Probably will not have time to blog about my adventures while at work, so its time for a little life reconstruction, prioritization, and implementation. Time to get busy people and make some serious moves. The nights when I sit on the couch and flip through the channels are done. Time to get my work done at work and then some!

This time next year, I do not want to be blogging about how I dropped the ball again, especially with this golden opportunity on me, time to be a super star, like my man Lupe Fiasco spits it…

Be easy and enjoy the video
