My fiancee assigned me two tasks on her list for planning our wedding for July 17, 2010. The first one was to make a wedding website, which I am currently in the process of trying to figure out (Email/Twitter/Comment me if you have ideas!). The only other task she wrote my name next to on her list of things "to do" was to find the DJ for the evening.
I like music. I figured this will be a breeze. However, I did not realize that there were a ton of bad DJ's out there. The one good thing about going to all five of these weddings so far (I have two more coming up), is that I get to see tons of different DJ's and understand the things about them that we like and dislike. It's almost like dating a girl and going through the courtship period where you are trying to learn about them to see if the relationship has promise.
Each wedding was my first date with each of the respective DJ's and so far none of these guys have hit a single with me! Once your mind is out of the gutter, please continue reading... None of them have been amazing enough for me to tell her "That is the dude that is going to do our wedding!". I have not been won over yet. That was my plan for how I was going to find the DJ, have him impress me, we exchange info, shake hands, and done deal.
Life for me is never that easy. The fiancee is on me hard now because I have nothing to show for other than a bunch of phone numbers. Back to the drawing board. I am gonna hand over my master list of contacts to her and she is going to make some moves with it. It's not that there is no one that I like, because there is one company that I have seen a few times last year who were really very impressive. They are just extremely overpriced, but maybe it is worth it?
All of the DJ's I have heard play great music, that is the easy part. What I am looking for is an MC who seamlessly progresses the evening without any bumps in the road. We want a guy whose voice is pleasant on the ears of our guests because I have been to a few weddings where the MC's have as much energy in their voices as a mime.
Do I pay the higher price for an established product that I know will meet our expectations?
OR
Do I take my chances on someone new? Give them a chance? And take the risk?
Its only my wedding night right?
As long as it doesn't end up like this wedding music I am good!
