Friday was my birthday. I went out and had an amazing time with all of my friends. We drank heavily into the night and enjoyed each other’s company. Everyone had a real good time and everything was great. The next morning I woke up to find eight missed calls on my phone from my fiancee.
The mother of a friend of ours who was out with us that evening had passed away that morning. It was a total eye opener. Her mom had been battling cancer for the past few years and she was doing extremely well lately from what I had been hearing. Then all of sudden things went bad in an eye blink. The crazy party is that the family lives down in Georgia, so my friend got on a plane immediately to be with her family.
One minute you are our having an amazing time, the next minute life changes. I can not imagine the plane ride down there or having to deal with any that she has to encounter. To be perfectly honest, the concept of death terrifies me, mainly because I can not comprehend it. A few of our friends have made or will be making the trip down to Georgia to support her through these tough times. I really wanted to take off work the next few days and show my support but it just was not feasible for me right now.
This topic obviously is off the subject of finance (as many things are on this site), but there is always something that can relate back to personal finance. The main tie in here is that there really are more important things in life than money. Sometimes we get totally wrapped up in the tiny little details of life, the nickel and dime moments of reality, and we lose touch with what really matters the most. Life can be brutally honest with us, but the reason these things occur is to kick us in the face and make us realize what really is important in life. Enjoy every moment.

wow, nicely said my friend. it's true, much more important things out there than money…my prayers go out to your friend's mom.
Gosh. Happy birthday and my condolences. Virtual hugs to you, your friend and her family.
@J Money – Thanks man, as much as we focus on the green, it takes extreme events for us to slow down life.
@mapgirl – Thanks for your thoughts, she is a strong girl and doing well.
